What is the Orton-Gillingham Method?

Orton-Gillingham instruction is the most effective way to teach spelling and phonics to struggling readers. Initially designed to help those with dyslexia, it has been proven to help ALL struggling readers master the foundational skills required to be effective readers and spellers. When students receive OG instruction, they become confident in their abilities and feel empowered.

1

Multi-Sensory

Multi-sensory instruction connects multiple pathways in the brain to help solidify new knowledge. By using the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways, students have a better chance of retaining what they have learned.

2

Direct & Explicit

Direct and explicit instruction means that nothing is left up to chance. Students are taught exactly what they need to know and "guessing" is not encouraged.

3

Structured & Systematic

All skills and concepts are taught in an order that makes sense to the student. When practicing reading, they are only seeing concepts that have been previously taught. Younger students will use decodable texts that help wire their brains with the information they have learned.

4

Cumulative

Each lesson reviews previously taught skills and concepts to ensure mastery. Each tutoring session builds on the last to create a strong understanding.

5

Individualize Instruction

Every student is unique in their needs. The one-on-one learning environment enables us to meet the needs of each student. Anna Gillingham said, "Go as fast as you can and as slow as you must" and we follow that philosophy.
